Varsity Preview – Ultimate Frisbee

Hallam Ultimate Chairman Daniel Copley provides a preview to the Sheffield Varsity Ultimate fixtures. They take place on Wednesday 20th April at Goodwin Sports Centre with the women’s team playing at 10:30am and the men’s team playing at 2:45pm.

There are only a few days left until the Northern 2A league champions Hallam Ultimate and Sheffield University’s Phat’eds come face to face in the Sheffield Varsity ultimate frisbee. Both games are expected to be close affairs with both the men’s and women’s teams desperate to earn their respective Varsity point and yearly bragging rights.

Ultimate 1

The Hallam Ultimate boys come into the game on the back of a disappointing loss to Bangor in the semi-final of the cup but have been doubling down in training.

With the Varsity match only next Wednesday, Hallam hope to be fully prepared to show Uni of Sheffield the fiery D and chilled O that won them the league with six wins out of six.

The Hallam women, affectionately known within the club as the ‘Hallam Hoes’ earned themselves a spot at this year’s outdoor nationals with strong wins over the more established teams of Nottingham and York. With ‘Aggressive Anna’ at the helm and several confident players around her, they hope to translate their incredibly strong team bond into a hard-fought win.

Ultimate 2

On the other side of the steel city, the Phat’eds men come into the varsity showdown after a disappointing year having lost many key players from last year’s exceptional squad.

Sheffield’s second team tried earlier in the season to tame the Hallam powerhouse but were cast aside 15-2 with relative ease. Despite Phat’eds being a division higher, there is no doubt that this year’s league results place Hallam as the favourites but they must remain vigilant against a Uni Of squad that always bring their A game.

The Women’s Varsity match-up is indoors and anything can be expected to happen in twenty five minutes on the 5-a-side court. With Hallam winning the match two years ago in the Hallam ‘Varsity Performance of the Year’ and Uni Of winning it back last year, nobody knows what to predict as both teams desperately want the win.

Hallam’s fresher Tyler Copley is really looking forward to the showdown, saying “I’ve played in local derbies before but I’ve never been involved [in] anything on the scale of Varsity week”. With a lot of Hallam’s squad either graduating this year or going on placement and the Phat’eds squad showing great potential for next year, Hallam have everything to prove come game day.
